¨         Alfred Gamil was born in Cairo on the 6th of September 1957. In 1972 he completed the preparatory school education at the Frères School (Collège de la Salle). In the same year he enrolled at the High Institute for Arabic Music, at the Secondary Section. 1975 he obtained the Diploma from the Arab Music Institute with excellent as general degree and in his specialization ‘voice’. During his study at the  same Institute he attended voluntarily  a year of general knowledge in music, comprising theories and composition at the Conservatory.

¨         1975, Alfred Gamil enrolled at the High Institute for Arabic Music studying the same a.m. specialization. In 1979 he obtained the B.A. with an excellent degree in both the general and the specialization studies, with honor grade of the first degree. 1980, he was assigned as assistant at the Institute, Section of Theories and Composition.

¨         1983 A. Gamil obtained his Master’s Degree with excellence from the Section of  Musical Instruments, specializing in lute. The topic of the thesis was: “The musical instrument of “tumbur” (a long-necked, stringed instrument resembling the mandolin) and its relation to the family of lute.”

¨         Paralelly he studied to play oriental violin since 1987 with Professor Bretzy in a way to become his main instrument with the lute.

¨         1990, A. Gamil obtained the Ph.D. in the philosophy of arts. The thesis bore the title: “Achieving a number of Arabic Maqamat (gemmas and scales) of the Turkish Sazenda”.

¨         Since 1996, A. Gamil holds the post of assistant professor at the High Institute for Arabic Music, affiliated to the Academy of Arts. He is tutoring a number of Dissertations about Arabic Music Theory, Oriental violin, Lute playing techniques.

Scientific Production

¨         Multiplicity of voices in the Arabic Music; a research published on 21/7/1993, presented at the Second Conference for Arabic Music” in Cairo, November 1993. It was published at the Magazine for Contemporary Thought and Arts in January 1994.

¨         Theoretical aspects of the ‘Longa’ shown on an example of the Longa Nahawand, presented as a lecture at Al Hanager theatre on 27/2/1995.

¨         Theoretical aspects of the ‘Longa’ shown on an example  of “Longa Athar Kurd was presented as a lecture at the library of the British Cultural Center on 23/2/1995.

¨         A proposal  for improving the style of advanced students in solfège using the Arabic rhythms”, published at the Magazine of Contemporary Art 1996.

¨         Basic Exercises for the lute Instrument, a book in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Inaam Labib, published in Cairo in 1993.

¨         Methods for learning Arabic Music, lecture on the Congress of Arabic Music Institutes at Istanbul 2003.

Activities and Journeys

¨         Participating as soloist both on  violin and  lute in the “Om Kalthoum Orchestra for Arabic Music” conducted by Hussein Geneid, at “Al Maseyah Orchestra” conducted by Ahmed Fouad Hassan, the “Hani Mahanna Band”, the  “Amir Abd El Meguid Band”, the British “3 + 3 Band”, the “Maqam Band”, the “Band of Egyptian Musical Evolution” conducted by Sami Tork, the “Instrumental Band” conducted by Atia Sharara, beside other numerous orchestras and bands.

¨         A. Gamil has a number of instrument and singing compositions recorded on tapes and laser records

¨         Gamil has represented Egypt in numerous official events and international festivals as the Cartage Festival in Tunisia in 1985 and 1989, Switzerland 1986, the Anniversary of the bethroning of the King of Marocco and Jordan 1991, the Egyptian Academy in Rome 1985, the Orient Festival in Sweden 1997, the Music

¨         Conference in Aisa and the Islamic World in Pakistan 1997. A. Gamil was a member of the Egyptian delegatrion participating in celebrating the silver Jubilae of the independence of India (1998), and Japan 1987, beside Canada, Tchekoslawakei, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Spain 1994, Kuwait and England 1986 and 1997, Oman 1986 and 1996.

¨         A. Gamil has participated in playing music in several official celbrations in numerous countries like Cyprus 1990, Yemen 1990, Portugal 1997, Algeria and Bahrain 1996, 1987, 1994, Emirates 1994 and 1996. A. Gamil has traveled several times to Austria, Germany, Spain, Kuwait, England, Oman, Switzerland, Italy and France.

¨         A. Gamil has collaborated with a number of well-known musicians in Europe like Abdou Dagher and the British composer Adrian Lee.

¨         A. Gamil has founded in 1999 a group for modern classical Egyptian music named Qithara, ( about 5 instrumentalists consisting of lute, violin, qanun, nay, rhythm, and 4-8 male and female singers alterning) and gives since November 2000 monthly performances. The program of Qithara is to rediscover this great period of modern classical Egyptian music (1900 – 1940) in which all arabic singing traditions were still in use and voice played the main role in songs. At the same time the masters of that period were open to all sorts of world music and tried to be inspirated of modern thought in music without neglecting the traditional taste. Mixtures between European romantic style and oriental sentimental mood, italian belcanto and traditional Egyptian Dor, adaptating European operettes musicals into the Egyptian comic opera genre known as Singing Theatre. Ancient hieratic vocal techniques of Qoran reading and popular vocal arts come together in this great period. As the motto of Qithara is: “Trees grow, as long as the branches are connected to the roots”, the Group works on this rich tradition as a base to understand and to create contemporary Egyptian music that is more authentic. Qithara is since its foundation in 1999 giving between 10 to 14 concerts yearly in Egypt and abroads.

¨         Qithara is holding an open school for international professional musicians and singers, and was tutoring musicians from USA, Finnland, Korea, Portugal, France and  Zansibar.

¨         A. Gamil participated in August 2000 as lecturer at a workshop of the Retreat of Simon Chahin in New York and gave a concert at Arabesque.

¨         A. Gamil presided a session about ‘Improvisations’ during the 10th Festival for Arabic Music at Cairo in November 2001. Further, Qithara participated in 2001 for the first time at the yearly International Festival for Arab Music.

¨         He was a member of the musical planning team for the festivities of “Les Français aiment le Caire” during mai 2001, “Parfums et cosmétiques dans l’Egypte” in Mai 2002, “Quand les Sciences parlent arabes” (in addition to delivering the music data for the catalogue and CD-Rom)  April to June 2003, all three organized by the French Centre for Cultural Cooperation in Cairo with  the governors of Paris and Cairo and the Ministry for Culture in France and Egypt, and gave 7 performances during the festivities.

¨         In June 2002 Qithara participated at the 50th Jubilee of the Egyptian Revolution and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Berlin.

¨         Alfred Gamil was invited in July 2002 to teach in a workshop in Weikersheim (CD)/ Germany and in Sansibar / Tansania.

¨         In April 2003 he participated at a concert with the French musicians Florence Bolton & Benjamin Perrot specialized in European Music between 16th and 18th century, organized by the French Centre for Cultural Cooperation in Cairo and different museums in Egypt and France.

¨         In June 2003 he participated at the International Symposion for Teaching Arabic Music, held in Istanbul and represented the Higher Institute for Arabic Music in Cairo.

¨         In August 2003 The first CD of Alfred Gamil's Compostion was produced and is available in Canada and Europe.

¨         In September  2003 he held a workshop in Toronto with the music Group MazaMeza and participated with them at 2 concerts in Toronto and Windsor organized by SmallWorldMusicSociety. In addition he gave 2 concerts in New York and Boston.

¨         2002, 2004 and 2005 Alfred Gamil held about nine (2-3 weeks long) workshops for musicians of the Dhow Countries Music Academy in Cairo and Zansibar.

¨         February 2005 he participated at a workshop with the German Group Nomade and participated at their concert in the Cairo Opera House with Helmut Leuchter ( CD).

¨         In December 2004 Qithara hold 2 Concerts in Kuwait City in the Al-Qareen Cultural Festival for Arab Arts.
